A Few Things to Consider When Designing a Website
When designing your website there are many important considerations that must be made in determining the structure of your website. Here are a few of the most important ones.
The first thing you should decide is what is the single most important purpose of the website. Once you decide what the purpose is then you can begin development with that end in mind. You should be laser sharp in providing a clear path to that objective.
Once you have a clear objective in mind then you must decide who you want to see your website. Who will be the primary visitor you want coming to your website? When you get a picture of this person in your mind, write down some of their characteristics. Are they male or female? How old are they? What are their interests or concerns? Generally people are looking for some way to help make their life easier or to save themselves some money. Try to figure out what your visitor is looking for.
Provide What Your Visitor Wants
If you want people to visit your site and remain on your site or to visit again, then you must provide for them what they are looking for. And you must provide it better than anyone else.
If they can find better information or service on your competitors site, then that's where they will go. That's why it's important to have a mental picture of your visitor. You'll develop your website with that person's characteristics firmly in your mind. That's the person you want to direct towards the primary goal of your website.
Now that you know who the visitor is and where you want them to go, then you must tell them how you're going to solve their problem. Show them the benefits of your product, service or information. Tell them how your product can ease their pain or provide a gain for them. That's what they are interested in. When you can show your visitor how you can best provide them with what they want, then they are more than willing to do what you want.
The Appearance of Your Site
When you visit a website, what gets your attention? What ticks you off? The thing that annoys most people are pages that load slowly. The more graphics and pictures on your page, the slower it loads. Just because you have a fast connection doesn't mean that everybody does. In fact the majority of web surfers still use slower dial-up connections.
So if you build a website with lots of pictures and graphics you are instantly annoying many of your visitors. Once they get annoyed then it is going to be very hard to gain their trust again. It generally takes about 4-6 seconds to make an impression on your visitor. You want that impression to be instantly positive.
You want your page to load quickly and present an uncluttered look. The text should be easy to read with lots of white space to make it easy on your visitors eyes. Nobody wants to be presented with a screen full of text from one edge of the screen to the other.
Graphics and pictures are fine but they should be optimized for size so that they will load faster. Try to keep larger picture files on inside pages of your site so that your visitors know before hand that they will be waiting for them to load.
The colors and fonts you use on your site should be considered when designing your website. Certain fonts may be better suited to one theme and not another. The same with colors, certain colors will have more of an appeal for one style of website but not another. Try to pick two or three colors that harmonize with each other, while still making it easy for the eyes to read. When you have decided on colors and fonts be consistent throughout the whole website.
The same goes for your linking method. Once you decide how you want your visitors to travel from one of your pages to another, be consistent throughout the whole site. That way nobody will become lost or confused. If that happens it will only tick them off even more. Don't try to play any cute games with them, that will only annoy them and they will be gone.
How Will Your Website Be Found
Another thing to consider before you begin building your site is how will people find it? Just because you build a webpage doesn't mean that it will be found. You have to tell people about it somehow. Either through your own efforts or have the search engines find people for you.
If you want to utilize the power of the search engines, and most of the time you do if you are building a website, you must also design your website so that the search engines really like it. To do that you must make the webpage readable to the search engine and convince them that your webpage would be the best result for the person who is doing the searching.
Search engines can't read your pictures or graphics and must rely upon the text of your page. They use the text on your page to match search queries of their searchers. Therefore it is important that you use words and phrases that people will search for. The more often the phrase is searched for the more often your page will be presented to the searchers.
Common words and phrases might be searched upon more often but there will also be more webpages competing for those words. You want to find words and phrases that are searched often but not used often by your competitors. When you find those words and phrases you find the key to lots of traffic.
