A Few Things to Know About Search Engine Submission

A website that hasn't been submitted to the search engines is much like an unlisted phone number. You know it's there and you can use it, but you won't get any calls if you don't tell anyone about it.

Submitting to the search engines is like listing your phone number in the phone book. Once it's in the book then you stand a chance of someone looking up your name and giving you a call. The same goes for your website. Once it's in the search engines you stand a chance of someone looking for it and finding it.

You can increase your chances of people finding it by making sure you are listed in the right search engines and by making sure your page is about something people are looking for. If nobody is looking for what you are offering, well, it's not going to get looked at. That's why it's so important to research a topic for your webpage and make sure you target the correct keywords before you even start building your webpage.

The Difference Between Search Engines and Directories

Generally when a person wants to find something on the Internet they use some type of search engine. They type a query into a search box and after pressing the submit button they are presented with a choice of sites that the search engine feels meets the query.

One of the most popular search engines is Yahoo, but Yahoo is really a directory. A directory is a list of websites arranged by category and presented in a tree style index. The sites are reviewed by a human editor who may rewrite the title and description of the site and makes sure that it is listed in the appropriate place. A surfer can then drill down through the index or perform a search for the website. When a search is initiated the searcher will use a word or phrase to find what they are looking for. If that term can be found in the title or description of your website then it would be listed as a possible choice to the searcher.

A search engine on the other hand uses what is called a spider to crawl through the Internet searching for websites. A spider is just a very powerful computer which goes from link to link and indexes all the words on a site. It then enters the information it collects in a huge database.

When someone conducts a search at a search engine, the index is searched for a match. If a match can't be found in its own index then it will use one of the directories to supply some of the results. Alliances are formed between different directories and search engines to supply each other information from their respective databases.

It is important to know something about the different connections between the search engines and directories. By submitting to the right directories you can then be assured of getting listed in all the search engines that use that directory.

Which Search Engines and Directories Should You Use

Recently, because of decreased revenues from advertising on the Internet, most of the search engines and directories have begun charging for inclusion into their indexes. This has led to many of the search results being dominated by those that can afford to pay, which are generally the larger commercial sites. This doesn't always provide the most relevant results for the searcher who may be looking for information only. Providers of information can't always justify the huge costs involved to have their sites listed in the directories that charge for inclusion.

The Main Directories

Yahoo
Yahoo is the big name when it comes to directories. They are the most well known but continually make changes to their service. It now cost $299US per year to be considered for listing in Yahoo's commercial or business section (no guarantees and no money back). They have recently instituted a free submission service, but don't hold your breath waiting to get listed and be prepared to jump through many hoops.

Looksmart
For the past few years Looksmart hasn't. They have had a hard time figuring out just what they want to charge for their service. You can get into Looksmart for free through Zeal although it may be more of an effort than you wish to make. Click here to submit through Zeal.

Open Directory Project
The ODP remains the only bright spot for the small website owner. It is still free and is used by many search engines to pump up the search results. This directory is powered by volunteer editors, so expect a little delay in getting listed but you can sometimes be surprised by getting listed within 2 weeks.

List your website with those three directories and you are guaranteed to make it into all the major search engines.

Most Popular Search Engines

There are literally thousands of search engines and everywhere you look you can find someone offering to list your website with several thousand of them for a few bucks. Well, you can just save your money. You would be real lucky to ever get a visitor from most of those sites and you are more that likely to get bombed with spam e-mail. There are only a few search engines that really deliver any traffic these days. Google generally provides about 80% of the traffic to most websites. They are quickly becoming the search engine of choice for most searchers. They use a different system of ranking sites than anyone else. The only way to get ranked well in Google is to have other sites link to you. They measure the popularity of your website and the more popular you are the higher you are ranked.

The way they measure popularity is by how many other credible sites link to you. And it is important what kind of sites link to you. Have you seen those link farms that ask you to place some links on your site and then they will include yours on a bunch of other sites? Well stay away from those kind of offers because Google doesn't give those kind of links much credibility and could possibly penalize you.

The following sites still accept free url submissions although they won't guarantee when or if your site will be included in their databases. They are the most popular search engines that will still provide some free traffic. The links below go to the appropriate pages for submitting your urls.

Google
Only submit your main page to Google and they will add your site the next time they crawl the web. No guarantees you will be included.

Sympatico-Lycos
Sympatico and Lycos also use Google and you only have to add your url once either here or to Google in the previous listing.

All The Web
Search results on AlltheWeb are provided by Yahoo!. If you are interested in submitting your site to be considered for free inclusion in the Yahoo! Search index, please Click Here. (Yahoo! registration required).

AltaVista
AltaVista used to be one of the more popular search engines and after a bit of a backslide is beginning to creep up in popularity again. The still have a basic submit which is free and allows you to submit up to 5 urls per session.

Exact Seek
Exact Seek is a Meta-tag search engine and you must have your title and description meta-tags formed. Only submit your main page.

Inktomi Search Index
Inktomi powers the MSN Web Pages Section and doesn't offer any guarantees for inclusion.
