Search Engine Optimization Tips
Search Engine Optimization or SEO as it is referred to by those who practise it, is a developing art that very few people understand. SEO is probably the most important step in the development of your website.
To optimize your site for the search engines means to make it as search engine friendly as possible so that they will rank your webpages higher than all the rest for a particular search query.
Many web developers will tell you that you must use as many keywords as you can think of that relate to the theme of your website. They will place these keywords in the Meta Tag for keywords and have you believe that if someone searches using one of these words then your site will be listed by the search engine.
It may be listed but if it is listed at number 2,000,000 or even 65, not many people will see it. You want your page to be listed number 1. Well not everybody can be number 1 but being number 25 or higher is pretty good.
The trick is to be listed high for a term that relates exactly to what your webpage is about. The way to do that is to research the best words and phrases before you even begin to build your webpage. Then you build each webpage around the 2 or 3 best words and phrases that suit your purpose for that page. By doing that you will stand a better chance of getting your webpage ranked higher than others. Do the same thing with all the other webpages on your website and pretty soon you have all the best keywords and phrases covered.
What About the Meta-Tags
For awhile all you heard about was the importance of meta-tags. Get as many keywords as you could, plastered through the meta-tags and you were in search engine heaven. Well the truth is, they aren't really that important except for the title tag. Many search engines will use your title tag but very few look at the mighty keyword tag. Some will use the description tag to reference your site but many just use relevant text from the first few lines of body copy.
When optimizing it is best to use your keywords throughout the body copy, especially in headings, as often as you can without it starting to sound repetetive. If you can read it out loud without stumbling or thinking it sounds funny, then it is probably alright. Remember, you are writing for humans and the search engines, but both like it the same way.
Optimize Your Alt Text and Links
Other places that are often overlooked when creating websites is the alt text for images. Alt text is what is displayed when you hold your cursor over an image or graphic. Some people with slower internet connections will sometimes surf with the graphics turned off, so that an empty box will be displayed in place of the graphic. If you use alt text then that is what will be displayed within the empty box. Some search engines also index this text so it gives you a chance to insert a few more of your juiciest keywords. You can do this with all your graphics and buttons.
When creating your links within or outside of your site you can also place keywords within those links. SEO takes advantage of all the different opportunities to fine tune your website to squeeze the maximum out of the search engines.
Don't be misled by those who try to fool or mislead the search engines by using doorway pages and other tricks to get your pages listed higher. They may work for awhile but eventually they will be found out and you could get your site banned from the search engines forever. Always write keyword focused content that relates to your service or product and make sure that each individual page on your site is optimized for its own keywords. You will please your visitors and the search engines.
