How to Find the Perfect Domain Name

In the early days of the Internet it wasn't too difficult to find the perfect domain name. You could pick any single word or combination of words for your domain name without too much trouble. But as the Internet grew and people began to see the importance of it, the best names were quickly taken. Some speculators made millions of dollars by scooping up everthing they could get their hands on and reselling for huge profits. There are still some companies holding thousands of domain names for resale and asking thousands of dollars for the most unique ones.

Today it is almost impossible to find a single word .com name. It is still possible to find domain names that use a combination of two or more words that can reflect the nature of your business and more possiblities are opened up by using hyphens or underscores between the words. The problem with that though, is if a potential visitor forgets to enter one of those symbols they could be visiting one of your competitors sites instead.

Top Level Domains

The most important domain is the .com. Most users of the Internet automatically think of .com in connection with most websites. The .com generally means that it is a commercial site. The other most important domains are .org which is used for most non-profit organizations, .gov for government websites and .net which stands for network. These four domains were the original domains developed and although they were meant for those particular uses there is no enforcement to ensure that they are used correctly.

Lately there have been several other top level domains developed although there hasn't been a whole lot of interest shown in them. Some of the newest ones are .biz, which was developed for commercial enterprises who couldn't get the .com name they wanted. For information only sites .info was created, and .name for personal websites. It is also possible to obtain a country specific name such as .ca for Canada and most other countries have their own domains.

If you are a business or commercial operation you should always try to obtain a .com domain name as your first choice. If you just can't find one that is appropriate then the next best choice would be a country specific domain. The country specific domains should still be able to deliver suitable names for most businesses.

How To Choose a Domain Name

When choosing a domain name for your website it is important to determine exactly what you wish to achieve with the website. What kind of audience do you wish to reach? Will you be selling a product or providing information? How will people find your website? Will you be using search engines to attract visitors or will you rely on offline promotion to bring visitors to your site? Your domain name should reflect the nature of your business and also be easy to remember and easy to spell.

If you are primarily using the search engines, then it is more important to try to use popular searched keyword terms within your domain name, but if you are going to be using offline methods of promotion then it is more important to have an easy to remember and spell name.

Some businesses prefer to use the name of their business for a domain name. If your business is well known and you believe people will be searching using your business name then that may be the preferred method to use, but if you think you would have better results being found by the type of product or service you offer then you should try to incorporate the product name or service within your domain name.

How To Find Out if The Name You Want is Available

To find out if the name you want to use is available you must conduct a domain search. There are many websites that offer this service for you. You type the name you would like to use in a search box and it will tell you if it is available and some even provide a list of similar alternatives, if the one you searched is already taken.

If you would like to conduct your own domain search, here a couple of places to try.

Nameboy.com will help you with a domain search and even provides a service to assist you with ideas for a domain name.

Network Solutions is one of the most popular websites to search for domain names and to look up information on existing websites. You can also register your domain with them although they are a little more expensive than others. Last year some people had been experiencing problems with names they registered there, so use their search tool but we wary of registering any names for now. We'll keep an eye on them and see how they shape up. Things do seem better lately.

If you are considering purchasing Site Build It, DO NOT REGISTER A DOMAIN NAME FIRST. Domain registration fees are included in the cost and administration is handled for you by Site Sell.com.
