Here Are a Few Copywriting Tips to Employ When Writing Your Web Copy
Basic copywriting skills also apply when writing the copy for your webpages. Know who your reader is and write for them. Be conversational but not overfriendly, and write as though you were talking to one person.
Don't try to use words that you wouldn't use in everyday conversation. You won't impress anyone and may offend people who don't know what you are talking about or by what others may take as a holier than thou attitude. Most people read and write at about a grade six level and most everyday conversation is at that level. If you are writing for a specific segment of the population or industry then it may be permissable to write in the jargon or lingo of that segment, but remember you will be alienating many others who may be interested in what you have to say.
Stay on Target With Great Content
Most people these days are using the Internet to search for information on something they need to know. The Internet is full of information but it can sometimes be overwhelming having to search through all the irrelevant material before you can find the nugget of gold. When writing the copy for your webpage you should always try to stay on target and provide great content that is focused on one aspect of your product or service. You can create as many pages as you want for your website but make each one relevant to one topic based around a common theme.
Write For the Scanners
You may not want to hear this but most of what you write will never be read. Most people using the Internet are scanners. Scanners are people who scroll down through your webpage looking for something that interests them. If all they see is an endless screen of text, you can be sure they will be gone quicker than they found you. The way to write for the scanners is to use lots of headlines in your copy. The headlines break up the text and provide a place for the scanners to rest their eyes. If they see something that interests them, then they may choose to read what lies below the headline.
It is therefore important to make sure that you write attention grabbing headlines. Your headlines should be able to give a general idea of what your page is all about and should succeed in making the reader do what you want them to do even if they don't read the rest of the page.
But just because most people will only scan your pages, don't think that it isn't important to ensure that the copy reads well and is full of relevant information. Remember you are not only writing for people but the search engines also. And the search engines WILL read every word.
